Teufelstein is an area in the Vienna Woods . It is about the Teufelstein mountain and its surroundings. The room is named after the Teufelstein rock , a strikingly shaped rock formation. The area is under protection as a nature reserve Teufelstein-Fischerwiesen .

geography

Southern Vienna Woods around 1900. Center: The valley of Kaltenleutzüge, Perchtoldsdorf and the Föhrenberge

General

The area is located in Lower Austria in the southern Vienna Woods in the market town of Perchtoldsdorf . It is located south of the Kaltenleutzüge valley at the western end of the strip of territory from the Rodaun district of the 23rd Viennese district of Liesing .

The area around the Teufelstein forms the west of the Perchtoldsdorf municipality on the border with Kaltenleutbaren and on the south-western border of the city of Vienna . The municipality of Perchtoldsdorf is also the largest part of the land in the area.

In the north lies the valley of the Dürren Liesing (Kaltenleutgenz Valley), in the east the area borders on the Parapluieberg .

In the south lies the ridge of the Höllenstein mountain range with the Kammersteiner hut and the Josefswarte on the rear Föhrenberg. In the west this mountain range continues towards Gießhübl and Sulz in the Vienna Woods .

The area around the Teufelstein belongs to the local recreation area of Vienna. It is often visited by hikers and cyclists.

The Priessnitz spring in the north of the Teufelstein, which is shown on older maps, is contained and not accessible. It is named after Vincenz Prießnitz , who used cold water and cold compresses ( cold water cures ) against symptoms of illness. From 1836 onwards, cold water healing institutions had been founded in Kaltenleutzüge (e.g. those of Wilhelm Winternitz ), some of which existed until the first half of the 20th century.

Flora and fauna

Parapluie pine in the Vienna Woods

The area is almost entirely forested. The vegetation consists mainly of red beech , black pine , oak and maple stands . Areas free of forests are located around the former quarry Fischerwiesen in the north of the Teufelstein mountain. There is no forest use of the forests in the nature reserve.

Occasionally, larger wild animals such as deer , hares and wild boars live in the forest . Squirrels can be seen on smaller animals . After prolonged rainfall there are various types of snails on the trails, e.g. B. Roman snails or large slugs . Fire salamanders and frogs live in damp places (especially near the Buch-Bründl and the small pond next to it). After longer dry periods, slow worms and harmless species of snakes such as grass snakes and Aesculapian snakes can be observed.

climate

The climate at Teufelstein is that of the Vienna Woods . The steep slopes are waterless, springs and small channels lie in the valleys all around.

Access routes

Forest road

Forest road: The Schutzhüttenstraße at Teufelstein east to Parapluieberg and Perchtoldsdorf

The Teufelstein mountain lies on a forest road. This road begins in Perchtoldsdorf and leads over the ridge to which the Teufelstein belongs, with various branches to Gießhübl and Sulz in the Vienna Woods . It is called "Schutzhüttenstraße" after the inns and shelters located next to it: Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus, Kammersteiner Hütte, Teufelstein-Hütte, Gh. Kugelwiese, former Gh. Seewiese and (burnt down in 2007, back in operation since 2009) Höllenstein . For this street, the name “ Liechtenstein street” or “Höhenstraße” is used in everyday life after the former manorial rule . However, there are other streets in Perchtoldsdorf with the last two names mentioned.

The forest road is closed to general motor vehicle traffic, but offered as a mountain bike route. Special permits are possible for hut carers and the transport of the handicapped. Parking spaces are located in the vicinity of the bus stops, which are the starting points for the ascents to the Teufelstein, and at the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide.

The area is in the operational area of the Wienerwald-Süd branch of the Austrian Mountain Rescue Service .

Footpaths

The hiking trails branch out at the Teufelstein

The Teufelstein can be reached via several hiking trails . The walking time is 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the starting point, physical condition and walking speed. The road network is very dense. There are a number of steeper or flatter variants for each of the access routes described.

Access from Perchtoldsdorf

The path leads over the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide and then on the forest road or over one of several steeper footpaths, past the Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus on the Parapluieberg, to the Teufelstein. There are approx. 300 meters in altitude to be mastered over four kilometers.

This ascent belongs to the long-distance hiking trails Nordalpenweg 01 and Wiener Mariazeller Weg 06. The starting point of the hike is either the terminus of the Vienna tram line 60 in Rodaun or a stop on the bus lines of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region , which connects the municipality of Perchtoldsdorf with this tram line and with Liesing or Mödling connect. Liesing and Mödling are on the Schnellbahn on the southern railway line .

Access from Gießhübl

The flattest path to the Teufelstein leads on hilly terrain almost entirely in the forest from Gießhübl on forest roads. It runs past the Kugelwiese (there is a restaurant) and a small chapel in the forest (forest prayer). There are around 100 meters of altitude to be overcome on around 3.5 km.

The starting point of the hike is the Gießhübler Heide, which is also the terminus of the bus routes from Liesing and Mödling of the Eastern Region Transport Association.

Access by cold people

On the evening ascent from Kaltenleutgabe: the area of the old quarry with the Teufelstein lake, on the right the northern slope of the Parapluieberges

This path is the shortest, but also the steepest ascent with an altitude difference of around 230 meters over two kilometers. It initially leads on a slightly rising stretch of path parallel to the brook "Dürre Liesing" along the city limits of Vienna, after the new residential complex "Waldmühle" left steeply uphill on the former access road to the quarry Fischerwiesen and at the end of the visitor zone of the nature reserve (barriers) left as a marked forest path steeply uphill past the Teufelstein rock and past the Buch-Bründl to the Teufelstein hut.

The Buch-Bründl is a small spring from which the Teufelsteinhütte obtained drinking water until the 1960s. The name is derived from the surrounding beech trees, not from a book.

The trail is part of the long-distance hiking trails Voralpenweg 04 and Wienerwald-connecting trail 444.

Downhill, this path should only be taken in daylight or with very good knowledge of the path. Apart from the fact that it is often covered with slippery, wet leaves for long stretches, there is a risk for non-residents of overlooking the places where the path leads to

  • Steep drop of the Teufelstein or
  • the slope of the quarry

evades. Crashes with serious injuries can result. Since the path is rarely used except in the summer hiking season, it cannot be expected that an accident victim will be found quickly.

The immediate vicinity of the former quarry and the quarry itself are a nature reserve, outside the visitor zone directly on the lake, entry is prohibited.

The ascent begins at the Rodaun-Waldmühle bus stops (still in the Vienna core zone of the Eastern Region Transport Association - VOR) or the next station, Kaltenleutgabe-Wienergraben (first outer zone with additional fare). These stops belong to the bus route 255 Liesing-Kaltenleutbaren-Sulz in the Vienna Woods. The Kaltenleutgaber Bahn , which also runs in this valley, has not had any passenger traffic since 1951.

Long-distance hiking trails

Pond at the Buchbründl

The Teufelstein is located on the following long-distance hiking trails:

Mountain bike route

The Teufelstein lies on the Parapluie mountain bike route . The travel time from Perchtoldsdorf to the hut is approximately minutes.

This route begins in Perchtoldsdorf and leads on the forest road over the Kugelwiese to the Gasthaus Seewiese and further west over the Kreuzsattel to Sulzer Höhe.

The first part to the Parapluieberg shelter (Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus), approx. 3 km, is marked as a difficult route (black route) because of its long ascent .

The route may only be used from March to October and only on the marked trails. The thin turf or layer of soil on the rock of the subsoil and the surface of the unpaved forest paths should not be unnecessarily burdened, the wild animals living in the forest (mainly deer) should not be disturbed. There is no winter service for this road : if there is snow, it is used by tobogganists .

Protected areas

The large oak buck is one of the protected animals in the area
On the red list of particularly protected animals: fire salamanders

Teufelstein-Fischerwiese nature reserve

The " Teufelstein-Fischerwiese nature reserve " is located on the Teufelstein .

This area was originally only 0.98 hectares (as the “Teufelstein nature reserve”). The reason for the protection was initially the occurrence of rare plants.

The nature reserve was significantly enlarged in 2016: since then it has also included the area of the former Fischerwiese quarry including the lake that was created there. The name of the nature reserve was changed to "Teufelstein-Fischerwiese", its new area is about 46 hectares. The area is now partly in the municipality of Kaltenleutbaren. The motive for protection is that the area of the former quarry is one of the most biodiverse z. B. wild bees, amphibians and reptiles in the entire Vienna Woods and should be preserved as a valuable "second-hand habitat". Furthermore, the ecological situation of the lake located there is to be secured by a bathing ban. This reinforces the ban on bathing in the lake, which has been in place since 1905, due to the ban on entry for safety reasons, and lighting campfires and tents is also prohibited.

Other protected areas

The Teufelstein area is also located:

The latter is named after the umbrella pines that grow in this area and can also be found on the Teufelstein: They are black pines , the crown of which on dry, stony locations does not grow in height but in width when old. Their characteristic appearance has given them the name umbrella pine - in the colloquial language of the area also parapluie trees, after the French word parapluie [ pa.ʁa.plɥi ] for umbrella .

Open space according to the zoning plan

The area around the Teufelstein is shown in the zoning plan as a forest or open space. These areas must be retained in this form of use.

Easement to maintain the forest and refrain from quarries

Part of the area in the northwest of the Teufelstein must be preserved as a forest. This has been contractually guaranteed to the owners of an adjacent property in the valley of Kaltenleutbaren since 1911: The right is entered in the land register as " easement to maintain the forest and not permit use for sand, gravel or stone extraction" .

Origin of the name

Winter forest at the Teufelstein

Rock shape

The name "Teufelstein" can be traced back to two strikingly shaped blocks of stone . They give the impression that they were made from one piece that was split in two. These Teufelstein rocks are located in the valley that forms the border between Perchtoldsdorf and Kaltenleutbaren. The valley branches off from the valley of the Dürren Liesing (Kaltenleutgebnerbach) to the south.

The part of the name "-stein" does not indicate that there was a fortification (castle, palace, etc.) in the area, although the word "stone" can also mean a castle. The castle ruins, which are located approx. 1000 meters to the northeast as the crow flies, are called Kammerstein and have nothing to do with the Teufelstein.

legend

Furrows in the rock were interpreted as traces of the devil's claws: summit area of the devil's stone

A legend is linked to the appearance of the rock formation, which gives rise to the name Teufelstein. It has its roots in the rock form of the area:

After the creation of the world, God is said to have named a place because of its beautiful view of the Lord's Seat. The devil wanted to destroy this place. He grabbed a mountain and pushed it in front of this point to destroy the view. This mountain range was given the name " Höllenstein- Zug". Imprints of the devil's hands should be seen on it. Furthermore, the devil struck the chair of God in two pieces: the two boulders of today's devil's stone.

The core of the legend is initially the appearance of the Teufelstein rock, which consists of two roughly equal sized rocks lying next to each other. The legend also tries to explain why the ridge in which the Teufelstein is located has rugged mountain shapes with steep slopes and rock faces compared to the areas further north: It is the first chain of hills south of the undulating, "Sandstone Vienna Woods" consisting of gentle terrain. The more rugged forms are traced back to the work of the devil, who is said to have shifted the ridge. An additional reason for the legend is a piece of rock in the summit area of the Teufelstein, whose uniform cracks were interpreted as traces of the devil's claws, which are said to come from the movement of the mountain by the devil.

Devil Stone Rock

Practice area for rock climbing on the Teufelstein rock

The two parts of the Teufelstein rock are a practice area for rock climbing . In the summer of 1994, the areas that had already become smooth were roughened, hooks and other safety points were set and further abseiling options were created.

The Teufelstein offers very easy and very difficult climbing routes

53 are for the rock climbing routes in the difficulty I ( "western route", "chicken-Stiagn") to IX ( "Prima Vista") published.

In everyday life, the rock is also referred to with the term “forest mill” or “forest mill climbing school”, after the former railway station (today's bus station) via which it was or is accessible.

Eastern part of the Teufelstein.

The rock is about 15 minutes' walk from the bus stops of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR) in Kaltenleut ents.

Teufelstein Mountain

General

The Teufelstein mountain is 547 m high and completely wooded except for a small meadow in the summit area. It doesn't have a name on all cards. Its summit lies in the fenced-off nature reserve, is forested and inaccessible.

The Teufelstein mountain is a northern secondary peak (Vorberg) of the ridge of the Föhrenberge west of the Parapluieberges. This mountain range is also called Höllenstein-Zug (see the legend ). The notch height to this ridge is about 30 meters. It is part of the Kalkstein-Wienerwald ( Kalkwienerwald ).

Several hiking trails meet at the saddle south of the Teufelstein mountain. The forest road that accompanies the entire mountain range leads over this saddle.

The summit is about 800 m as the crow flies from the border of the city of Vienna in the southwest near Rodaun and Kaltenleutgabe. Next to him is the Teufelstein hut.

geology

The limestone strip in the north of the Teufelstein was quarried. The concrete tower on the left belonged to the former Rodaun cement works and is already in the urban area of Vienna

The Teufelstein mountain consists mainly of dolomite (so-called main dolomite from the Karn to Nor ). The rock is over 200 million years old.

Aptychs are characteristic limestone fossils in the Teufelstein area

In the north, the Teufelstein was not made of dolomite, but of limestone ( aptychen limestone , limestone marl ). It is a sedimentary rock from the transition period between Jurassic and Cretaceous , which is 130 to 150 million years old ( Tithon to Untereokom ). It comes from the Tethys in the Mesozoic Era . Between the main dolomite and the limestone there is a narrow layer of other, similar rocks: reef limestone, calcareous sandstone, etc. from the Mesozoic era ( Rhaet , Lias , Malm , etc.). The rock layers are known as "Schrambach Neokomaptychenschichten".

In the rock a number of fossils (was fossils ) found. The aptyches , which give the lime its name, are pieces of pine made of ammonites , which were also interpreted as the cover of the ammonite casing. They are characteristic fossil remains of the limestone quarried near the Teufelstein.

Because of the economic importance of limestone for the quarries, the different types of rock in a small area and the easy accessibility from the city of Vienna, the area has been geologically examined in detail and published about it.

According to the tectonic overview, the area belongs to the Höllenstein-unit of the Frankenfels-Lunzer cover system of the Northern Limestone Alps (Eastern Alps) . The Teufelstein lies in the northeast spur of the Limestone Alps and is part of an arched rock formation (Höllenstein anticline ). He gave part of this bulge his name: the "Teufelstein anticline".

The rock pull then runs to the east in the underground of the Vienna Basin . It is overlaid by the gravel of the Vienna basin just beyond the city limits of Vienna (Hochstraße area in Rodaun). Just a few kilometers behind it ( Meidling area ) it is in the Vösendorfer Depression over 1000 meters below the earth's surface, northwest of Vienna ( Aderklaa ) it can be found at a depth of 2500–3500 meters.

The dolomite of the Teufelstein area comes partly from the north . This type of rock (“Noric part of the Perchtoldsdorfer dolomite”) has been identified as a gas-bearing reservoir by a 5435 meter deep borehole near Strasshof .

Quarry

Quarry and lake on the northern slope of the Teufelstein mountain

The northern slope of the Teufelstein Mountain is largely no longer there. It consisted of various limes and marls and was quarried from 1905 to around 1980 in a large quarry . Was in the cement plant from the rock Wien-Rodaun the Lafarge Perlmooser cement produced. For a long time this plant was one of the largest cement plants in Austria. It was located around the Waldmühle station on the Kaltenleutgenz Railway . Remnants of the mining operations (drainage shafts, barriers and ruins) are on the site. In 2007 the factory premises were no longer used for cement production, but served as a transfer station for the Holcim company .

The quarry can no longer be opened. Its earlier dedication in the development plan, "Grassland material extraction site - quarry with subsequent use of grassland agriculture", was changed to grassland in 1998 . Quarrying would also no longer be permitted under regional spatial planning .

The deposits of economically usable limestone (solid rock with a high proportion of calcium carbonate CaCO 3 ) on the Teufelstein and its surroundings have been known and used for a long time: the first lime burner hut is said to have been built in 1538. 1569 are called "Welsche Kalkbrenner at the Khaltleutgebin". The first industrial lime kiln was in 1846 at the Waldmühle at the northern foot of the Teufelstein mountain. At the end of the 19th century there were several lime kilns on the site of the cement works and the quarries . In them was burnt lime produced. This substance was the basis for building materials (lime paint, lime mortar, etc.). The Kalk- und Zementfabrik AG was founded in 1894. This company was united with the Achauer Cementfabrik and the Tiroler Werken Kirchbichl-Perlmoos under the company "Perlmooser Zementfabriken".

Quarry lake

NSG Teufelstein Fischerwiesen

The lake at the foot of the quarry slope can also be traced back to the quarry. It is a place where the rock was quarried 23 meters deeper than the surrounding area and which filled with water after quarrying.

The lake is right on the quarry slope. Its use and entering the surrounding area are dangerous and, with the exception of the visitor zone of the nature reserve, are prohibited. First of all, there is a constant risk of falling rocks: Chunks of earth and rock come loose from the slope and fall into the lake. Larger slopes slide downhill. A major landslide or landslide cannot be ruled out either: in August 2002, thousands of cubic meters of rock fell after prolonged rainfall in the abandoned Kritsch quarry , which is only about one kilometer further east in the same geological zone. This and the necessary renovation measures also interrupted a hiking trail.

Teufelstein Hut

Teufelstein Hut

This house is the mountain hut of an alpine club. It is located a few meters from the summit of the Teufelstein mountain.

The Teufelstein Hut is surrounded by steep slopes that merge into the former quarry in the north after a few hundred meters of forest. There is a several meter high rock eruption on the premises of the hut itself. The hut is therefore only partially suitable for visitors with small children, and there is no children's playground. The view is only to the west.

The Teufelstein Hut is not open all the time. It has retained its original character as a refuge , as a base for mountaineers and climbers, although it is located in a local recreation area only a few hundred meters as the crow flies from the metropolis of Vienna . The house is looked after on weekends, with the exception of a blocking period in midsummer, free of charge by volunteers from the association and its surroundings. Simple meals and drinks are offered. In bad weather there is space for about 40 people. Overnight stays in the simple mattress dormitory on the top floor of the hut are only possible for the respective hut supervisors and their guests, but not generally.

Guest room of the Teufelstein hut

Connection to the drinking water network has existed since 1995. At that time, with significant support from the provinces of Vienna and Lower Austria, the restaurants in the Föhrenberge were also connected to the sewage system. The Teufelstein hut has hut category III .

The Teufelstein Hut was built by the Perchtoldsdorf Group of the Austrian Mountain Association (ÖGV) and opened on June 19, 1932. It does not stand on its own property, its construction was initially based on a lease for the construction area for 30 years. The hut is recorded in the land register together with the other huts in the area .

In the valley of Kaltenleutgabe

The building site for the hut was not without controversy. The Wienerwaldschutz association feared that the area's rare flora would be endangered by running an inn. The hut construction site was relocated and a "protected alpine garden" was set up, which a few years later became a prohibited area and finally a nature reserve .

The Austrian Mountain Association (ÖGV) was founded in Vienna in 1890. It has been a branch club (section) of the Austrian Alpine Club since 1955. Before the Teufelstein Hut was built, the association had accommodation on the ground floor of the Josefswarte on the Hinteren Föhrenberg, an elevation south of the Teufelstein Mountain.

In 1948 and 1959 the terrace was added, the interior of which was set up for emergency quarters. In the years after 1960 the hut was to be given up or returned to the parent club, the Perchtoldsdorf local group of the ÖGV wanted to dissolve. On January 23, 1963, the group was taken over by another group of people under the same name.

In 1972/73 the hut was expanded to include a hall wing with a cellar. The opening day of the renovation was September 9, 1973. The lease contract for the smelter property had been extended to 2020.

On March 7, 1980, the independent "Teufelstein-Perchtoldsdorf Section" was founded in the Austrian Alpine Association. This also placed the hut's financing base on a new basis, because the independent section was able to independently obtain access to funding (hut subsidies) from the Alpine Club.

The Teufelstein hut was renovated in summer 2003.
