Josefswarte from the south

The Josefswarte is a twelve meter high steel observation tower on the summit of the Hinterer Föhrenberg , on the crest of the Höllenstein mountain range in the Föhrenberge Nature Park in Lower Austria . The observation tower is located in the municipality of Perchtoldsdorf in the Vienna Woods in the immediate vicinity of the Kammersteinerhütte . It is subject to monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The Perchtoldsdorf Beautification Association, founded in 1880 , had a wooden lookout tower 7.5 meters high built according to plans by Franz Fröhlich , who also planned the Perchtoldsdorf office building. The lookout point was officially opened on June 29, 1881. The wooden control room was named after Josef Hyrtl , a doctor and benefactor from Perchtoldsdorf. However, the control room had to be closed in 1890 due to dilapidation. The Lower Austrian Mountain Association took on the matter in cooperation with the local beautification association and built a new observation tower. The costs for this amounted to 2,200 guilders , most of which were raised from donations. After the old wooden observation tower was removed, the new iron tower was built in the summer of 1891. The construction was carried out by the Viennese company Gridl , which among other things also built the Matraswarte am Schöpfl . The new Josefswarte was officially opened on September 13, 1891. Until the opening of the adjacent Kammersteinerhütte in 1912, there was a wooden refuge between the four tower legs, which offered shelter for around 40 people.

In 2017 the system was renovated, corrosion damage repaired, wooden steps and platforms replaced.

architecture

The iron tower structure reaches a height of almost eleven meters. With the 1.1 meter high concrete foundation, the tower has a total height of twelve meters. The ascent to the platform is initially via three staircases with a total of 44 steps, each 17 cm high and 108 cm wide. At a height of 7.5 meters, the staircase goes over a platform into a narrow spiral staircase with a total of nine steps. These are each 24 cm high and 80 cm wide. The viewing platform is 9.7 meters above the foundation and 10.8 meters above the ground. The viewing platform measures 4 × 4 meters. The floor plan of the tower girders tapers towards the top from 3.75 meters in the area of the foundation to 2.35 meters in the area of the platform.

outlook

From the viewing platform of the Josefswarte you have a good view of the city of Vienna, the Vienna Basin, Perchtoldsdorf and numerous neighboring communities such as Maria Enzersdorf or Breitenfurt near Vienna . In the north, the ruins of the Perlmoos cement works in Kaltenleutbaren could be seen until they were demolished . To the southwest you have a great view over the Höllenstein mountains, to the Hohen Lindkogel and beyond.
