The Schöpfl is 893  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria .

Location and surroundings

The Schöpfl belongs to the flysch zone on the northern edge of the Alps . It forms a long mountain ridge running roughly in the direction of west-southwest - east-northeast with a relatively steep north flank and a more articulated, flatter south flank. At its summit, the areas of three municipalities and two political districts border one another: Klausen-Leopoldsdorf and Altenmarkt an der Triesting in the Baden district and Brand-Laaben in the Sankt Pölten-Land district . The mountain forms the source area of the Schwechat , the Triesting and the Große Tulln and is thus on the main Alpine ridge .

The Schöpfl is largely covered by deciduous forest. The Matraswarte stands on its summit , from which, in good weather, you can see the highest mountains in Lower Austria, the Schneeberg and the Rax , to the south, the Ötscher to the west , and to the north as far as the Danube . A prominent point on the Danube is the Dürnrohr power plant . Just below the summit is the Schöpfl refuge of the Austrian Tourist Club .

Due to the purity of the air and the significantly lower light pollution compared to Vienna , the Leopold Figl Observatory of the University of Vienna was built in 1969 at Mitterschöpfl ( 882  m ), a nearby secondary peak.

The summit is best visible from Forsthof in the municipality of Brand-Laaben .

Climbs

As the highest mountain in the entire Vienna Woods, thanks to the extensive panorama from the Matraswarte and with a hut base in the summit area, the Schöpfl is of course a popular destination for hikes. At the same time it is not overcrowded. One reason for this is that its summit ridge can only be reached by one's own strength. The location of the Schöpfl away from major transport routes also contributes to this: its surroundings are difficult to reach by public transport; the nearest train station ( Rekawinkel on the old western railway line) is already too far away as a starting point for a day hike.

The Schöpfl can be reached from all directions on marked ascent paths.

  • The shortest ascent from the Forsthof saddle leads through the steep north flank on the Heinrich-Gith-Steig or a little longer on the so-called Pensionistensteig to the summit. Walking time: 50 to 60 minutes.
  • From the village of St. Corona am Schöpfl over the flatter southern flank to the Matraswarte. Walking time: 1 hour.
  • From the saddle of the Klammhöhe briefly on a side road to the east to the Bruckhof , then a hiking trail on the long western ridge of the Schöpfl and over the Wittenbachberg with only a slight incline to the summit. Walking time: 2 hours.
  • From the Schöpflgitter (2 kilometers west of Klausen-Leopoldsdorf ) in a steady gradient a little south of the Vorderschöpfl and over the eastern ridge to the summit. Walking time: about 2 hours.
