The Matraswarte is a 17 meter high steel observation tower on the summit of the Schöpfl , the highest point in the Vienna Woods on the municipal boundary between Altenmarkt an der Triesting and Brand-Laaben . This makes this observation tower the highest building in the Vienna Woods. It is located near the Schöpfl refuge .

history

In 1865, the imperial royal forest of ärar built a lookout point at the highest point of the Schöpfl at 893 meters. This originally served as weather protection for the surveying stone that is still in place today. Due to the good view, the control room quickly developed into a popular destination. Therefore, the Vienna Woods section of the Austrian Tourist Club decided in 1897 to rebuild the control room. The 17 meter high control room was built in the same year and inaugurated in 1898. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the emperor's reign, she was christened "Kaiser Franz Joseph Warte". In 1932 the lookout point was renamed “Matras-Warte” after Franz Eduard Matras , the first president of the Austrian Tourist Club. In 1945 the control room was damaged by the effects of the war and repaired in 1950. The observation tower was renovated in 1979 and 2009.

Immediately next to the observation tower is a stone pyramid dated 1867, which was built as part of the Central European degree measurement .

outlook

From the viewing platform of the Matras-Warte there is a panoramic view of the Laabental, the Weinviertel and Waldviertel , the Leiser Berge , the Leithagebirge , across to the Leopold-Figl Observatory built in 1969 , to the Gutenstein and Türnitz Alps , to the Schneeberg and the Rax and the Ötscher . On particularly clear days you can even make out the Hochschwab and Totes Gebirge .
