The Schöpfl-Schutzhaus is a refuge of the Vienna Woods section of the ÖTK on the Schöpfl , the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria .
location
The Schöpfl refuge is located at 870 m a.s.l. just below the Schöpfl summit in the Vienna Woods and near the Matraswarte, built in 1898 . It is one of the popular excursion destinations in the Vienna Woods, as it is easy to reach for day hikers.
History
On August 12, 1906, a wooden shelter was inaugurated on the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods and was later (?) Named after the then chairman of the Vienna Woods Tourist Club section, Franz Krebs. After an extension in 1911, the shelter burned down in November 1920. A stone successor building was inaugurated on September 16, 1923 and destroyed by artillery fire in the course of the Second World War in April 1945. After the war, the barracks were rebuilt and opened on October 16, 1949. The current one was built in 1997 and officially opened with the 100th anniversary of the nearby Matraswarte on October 11, 1998.
Even in the "primeval times", travel writers praised the view from Schöpfl, the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods. From the Matraswarte on the summit you can see all the way to the elevations of the Waldviertel , Ötscher , Schneeberg and the Danube valley. In a volume published by Crown Prince Rudolf about the monarchy, the Schöpfl is praised as a special panoramic mountain. Just below is a cozy, new shelter, it is the fourth of its kind on the "Schopf" of the Vienna Woods, which is already mentioned in the literature of the ancient Greeks and Romans as "forest mountains" and was obviously climbed in ancient times.
