The Höllenstein is a 645 m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria .
The entire area is located in the Vienna Woods Biosphere Park. Most of the mixed forest is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests .
On the wooded summit stands the Höllensteinhaus , a house for friends of nature , with the around 10 meter high Julienturm as a lookout tower , which was built in 1880 and redesigned in 1896 and raised for better visibility.
The Höllenstein is a popular destination for day-trippers from the Vienna area . The summit is in the municipality of Kaltenleutzüge in the Mödling district ; However, there are climbs on wide hiking trails from different sides. The steeper ascents start at Kaltenleutgabe and Wassergspreng , while the flatter ascents start from Gießhübl or Sittendorf (municipality of Wienerwald) .
On June 23, 2007 the Höllensteinhaus partially burned down. A short time later, on the night of June 26, 2007, the refuge burned down again, this time down to the outer walls. In 2009 the hut was rebuilt and opened.
On the south-western slope in the direction of Kaltenleutgabe there are some caves about 540 m above sea level. A. , the largest of which is the Geole Cave . It was discovered in 1930. The name is made up of the abbreviated first names of the researchers. On the basis of archaeological research in 1950, Roman ceramic remains were found in it. Finds from the Hallstatt period were also reported.
