Kampot ( Khmer : កំពត , transcription: Kâmpôt , IPA : [ kɑmpot ]) is the capital of the Cambodian province of the same name . In 2008 it had 48,310 inhabitants.

Location and geography

The city of Kampot is located on the Preaek Tuek Chhu (also called Preaek Thom River) in the south of the country, about 30 km from the Vietnamese border. It is connected to the Gulf of Siam by the 5 km long sand delta of the Preaek Tuek Chhu . A few kilometers to the northwest are the southern foothills of the Elephant Mountains with the Bokor National Park , which is also known as "Phnom Bokor National Park" or "Preah Monivong National Park".

National Highway 3 connects Kampot with Phnom Penh and continues on National Highway 4 with Sihanoukville . The Nationaroad 33 leads from Kampot to the international border crossing Hà Tiên to Vietnam . In the north is Kampot Airport (IATA code KMT), which is currently not served. Rail traffic to Phnom Penh has resumed. Several passenger trains run on weekends and public holidays, which can also charge cars. Public transport is handled by shared taxis and long-distance buses.

economy

The area around Kampot is known for producing the best pepper in the region. The area is also considered to be the main producer of durian . Other agricultural products are rice, rambutan , grapefruit, pineapple and mangosteen . The city has a fishing port. The former trading port is no longer important. In the east of the city there are extensive salt pans for the extraction of sea salt.

Attractions

Kampot is valued by tourists for its location in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Cambodia and for its colonial charm. In addition to the mountains of the Bokor National Park and the Bokor Hill Station , the rural surroundings with their karst mountains and caves as well as the nearby former seaside resort of Kep are worth seeing. The city also has a zoological garden.
