Kep ( Khmer : កែប , transcription: Kêb , IPA : [ kaːe̯p ]) is a city in Cambodia and the capital of the Kep province of the same name . In 2008 the city had 12,705 inhabitants. The city of Kep forms one of two districts of the province and is in turn divided into two municipalities: Sangkat Kaeb and Sangkat Prey Thum .
Kep has direct access to the Gulf of Thailand and is one of the most famous coastal cities in Cambodia. Kep is only a few kilometers west of the Vietnamese border. A well-developed road connects the city with Kampot , the capital of the surrounding province of the same name .
history
For a long time, Kep was the most important seaside resort in the country. Many of the colonial buildings were destroyed during the rule of the Khmer Rouge . With the resurgent tourism in Cambodia, the city is slowly flourishing again and is now a much-visited coastal city again. Particularly popular is the wide beach, artificially expanded by adding sand, in the immediate vicinity of the town center.
Attractions
Kep is famous for its crabs, a monument in the form of an oversized crab was specially dedicated to them. Also of importance is the local fish and crab market, which is both tourist and economic.
Just outside is the Kep National Park with an 8 km long circular route.
