Kanai Hiroyuki ( Japanese 金井 宏 之 ; born May 16, 1925 in Amagasaki ; † January 26, 2012 ) was a Japanese businessman, writer and philatelist.

Life

His father was a wealthy businessman and started collecting stamps at the age of five. At the age of 13 he intensified his hobby and founded two collectors' associations during the course of his university studies. He first completed a degree at a technical faculty at Nihon University and then studied political economy at the renowned Waseda University . He then worked for the textile machine factory that his grandfather had founded. He later became president of various companies.

At first he was a general collector and after the Second World War he specialized in stamps from Japan , Finland and the British colonies . He gained fame in philatelic circles with his collection of Red and Blue Mauritius , which was unique at the time , and was able to bring into his possession a total of six of the 27 known examples of this valuable stamp. Among other things, he acquired the " Bordeaux Letter " in 1971 for 120 million yen, which at the time was equivalent to over 1 million US dollars; today it would be over $ 6 million. In 1988 he first sold the “Bordeaux Letter”; He sold the rest of the famous Mauritius brands through the auction house David Feldman in 1993 at an auction in Zurich . He received many awards and was most recently director of the Postage Stamp Museum in Kobe .
