The Mozambique Strait (also Mozambique Canal , Portuguese Canal de Moçambique ) is the name of the strait between Mozambique in southeastern Africa and the island of Madagascar . It is around 1500 km long, between 420 and 1000 km wide and is bounded in the north by the Comoros . In the strait there are still some coastal islands of Mozambique such as Bazaruto and Ilha de Moçambique , some islands belonging to Madagascar such as Nosy Be , Nosy Hara and Nosy Mitsio , as well as three islands of the Îles éparses .
