Five subspecies are common in the Canary Islands , one of them also in southwest Morocco; two subspecies each are endemic to the Cape Verde Islands and the Ilhas Selvagens .

In the Canaries it is very common locally on dry, stony ground at altitudes of up to 1000 meters. It is seldom found on forested cliffs up to 1250 meters, especially in the area around Aguamansa on Tenerife .

In terms of plant sociology, the species belongs to the class of succulent bushes of dry, shallow places (Kleinio neriifolii-euphorbietea canariensis).
