Kang Kyŏng-ae or Kang Kjong-ä (born April 20, 1906 in Songhwa , Hwanghae-do , † April 26, 1943 in Changyŏn) was a Korean writer .

Life

Kang Kyŏng-ae was born on April 20, 1906 in Songhwa, Hwanghae-do. After an unhappy childhood, she studied for a year at the Tongdŏk girls' school in Seoul and was active in various campaigns and civil organizations. In 1931 she moved to Manchuria, where she became a writer, joining the Northern Home (Bukhyang) Society, which included writers such as An Su-gil and Park Yŏng-jun . Most of Kang's works date from between her arrival in Manchuria in 1931 and 1939, when she accepted a position as chief editor of the Manchurian branch of Chosun Ilbo . When she returned to Korea in 1942, her health was in poor health and she passed away the following year.

Kang is one of the most accomplished writers of the colonial era. She wrote stunning stories about the Korean underclass from a perspective that was sensitive to class as well as gender differences. Even if she was not directly involved in the left-wing Korea artista proleta federatio (KAPF), she was well-read in socialist literature and her personal experiences with poverty-stricken Koreans in Manchuria allowed her to see the effects of the colonial government on the Korean people at close quarters To investigate proximity. In fact, many of her works are set in Manchuria: The Broken Zither (Pagŭm), Vegetable Garden (Chaejŏn), Football Game (Ch'ukku chŏn), and Mother and Child (Moja) all reflect, to some extent, their experiences in Manchuria. She also deals with the oppression of women in works such as Mother and Daughter (Ŏmŏni-wa ttal). Her portrayal of the lives of women abused by upper-class men - a simple peasant girl who is raped by her landlord and a waitress who is betrayed by her lover, an elite student - turned into a socio-economic one Pay attention to relationships that subjugate women and the process through which they can gain awakening and liberation. Her book Dawn on Intschon (In'gan munje), which is widely regarded as her best work, also points to a number of class and gender differences, depicting an uneducated man struggling with economic problems and ultimately one dies a pathetic death.
