Kang Kyeong-hwa (born April 7, 1955 in Seoul ) is a South Korean politician and diplomat who has been the Foreign Minister of South Korea since June 18, 2017 .

biography

Kang Kyeong-hwa studied political science at Yonsei University and graduated in 1977 with a bachelor's degree . At the University of Massachusetts Amherst , she completed a master’s degree in communication in September 1981 and obtained her PhD in the same subject in February 1984 .

During her studies, she worked for the South Korean broadcaster Korean Broadcasting System and after completing her studies, she held various teaching positions in the United States and South Korea. In 1998 she joined the diplomatic service and was among other things sent as ambassador to the United Nations from 2001 to 2005 . In 2013, Kang was appointed Deputy UN Emergency Aid Coordinator by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon .

On June 18, 2017, she succeeded Yun Byung-se as head of the Foreign Ministry . Kang became the first woman in this office.

Kang Kyeong-hwa is married and has two daughters and a son.
