Aerial photographs were taken in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions and in 1957 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition . Soviet scientists named it. The further naming background has not been passed down. A possible namesake is a cape of the same name on the October Revolution island in the arctic island group Severnaya Zemlya .
