The chapel was built in 1324 and consecrated to Mary Magdalene . In 1676 many houses and the school burned down in Südhemmern. After two years the place was ravaged by a fire again and the chapel burned down. A year later, the French drove out the locals and continued to loot and destroy the chapel. In 1687 the reconstruction of the chapel began, as can be read on a ceiling beam of the chapel.

In 1993 the parish acquired a courtyard south of the chapel and converted it into a parish hall.

architecture

The hall construction is completed by a semicircular apse . Four mighty pillars support the building in the corners. A small belfry with a bell from 1821 is attached above the western part. The roof structure is covered with gray pans and supported on lugs . In the northwest over the entrance door the roof protrudes far out.

In the small churchyard you can see the remains of a quarry stone wall and some old tombstones from the 19th century. A cannon ball in the outer wall commemorates the battle of Minden in 1759.

Furnishing

Inside the church there is an altarpiece from 1701, the centenary crucifix on the altar and the baptismal font from 1740. The richly decorated pulpit is the oldest piece and bears the date 1574. It was bought in 1687 in Dankersen .

regional customs

At the time of the fires and looting by the French, there was a heavy hailstorm in Südhemmern in 1680, which destroyed the entire harvest. To protect against further accidents, a hail holiday was celebrated at that time , which is still celebrated annually on the Monday after Trinity .
