Mariazell Chapel
The Mariazell Chapel is part of the Maria Hilf patronage ! consecrated place of pilgrimage in the municipality of Sursee in the canton of Lucerne . The chapel belonged to the Catholic parish of Sursee from 1371 at the latest and looked after the former hamlet of Wile , which was later called Maria Zell and which today forms the Mariazell district.
Formerly located directly on the lake basin, the Triechter , the building was demolished in 1657. A stone cross from 1723 today reminds of the former location. As a replacement, today's single-nave sacred building was erected on the front moraine and inaugurated in 1658 by the then Bishop of Lausanne Jodok Knab . The two bells that ring the bell are dated 1594 and 1658. A chaplaincy was built next to the sacred building in 1753 . The chapel has been rebuilt and renovated several times, and total restorations were carried out on both buildings in the 20th century.
The chapel has three Marian altars carved out of wood, which are richly decorated in the early Baroque style . In theatrical scenes, half - life- size, fully plastic and polychrome figures represent stations from the life of Mary . These were created around 1660/65 by the Tüfel sculptor's workshop in Sursee. The flat wooden ceiling is painted with 35 images of Marian symbols .
Directly next to the pilgrimage chapel is the language therapy school and the socio-educational school home Mariazell Sursee . The institution was founded in 1896 a. a. Founded by the Schnyder von Wartensee and Meyer-am Rhyn families . Since then, in addition to secular specialists, sisters from Baldegg Monastery have also looked after the students.
On the main road from Sursee to Schenkon is a stop of the post bus line Sursee-Schenkon-Sempach station and the bus Sursee-Schenkon-Beromünster. From the holy house , the pilgrimage route leads past the first vines to the place of pilgrimage. The elevated location with approx. 524 m above sea level. M. on the moraine hill - around 20 meters above the lake level - offers a south-easterly view over the Sempachersee and, in good weather, with a view of the Pilatus and the Central Swiss Pre-Alps . The mild location on the southern slope towards Lake Sempach has repeatedly brought good harvests to the vineyard , which was laid out at the beginning of the 21st century .
