The chapel is in the easternmost part of the community, in Gula near the Tobel opposite Schnaus . Gula used to be a larger settlement and is described by Nicolin Sererhard as a small community . It is conceivable that the patronage of the Schnaus Church was transferred to this chapel when it was abolished during the Reformation .

There are no written documents about the construction or the early history of the chapel. Erwin Poeschel suspects it originated in the 16th century. In 1643 the chapel was rebuilt or rebuilt. Although this is not dated, it is confirmed by the vault painting, which, due to its peculiarities, can be attributed to Giovanni Battista Macholino from Val San Giacomo near Chiavenna or to his workshop. Macholino had already painted in the Catholic Church Pleif in Vella and in the Catholic Church Sagogn .

Both bells from 1643 with the inscription "SANCTA MARIA ET SS. FRANZISCE ET SANCTA MA. MAG. ORATE PRO NOBIS A. DO. 1643" have been preserved. The larger one still hangs in the chapel, the smaller one in the roof turret of the St. Antonius chapel in Rueun. The tower is younger than the chapel and stands on the north side of the choir.

In 2000 the chapel was extensively restored.
