Our Lady ob der Au in Obergriesbach

The Catholic Chapel of Our Lady ob der Au , also Aukapelle , is a monument near Obergriesbach . It is located east of the village on the road from Dasing to Sulzbach .

history

In 1685 the owner of the Hofmark Obergriesbach at that time, Johann Joseph Wiguläus Freiherr von Weichs, had five sheet metal panels with pictures of the five wounds of Christ put up on the road to Sulzbach . Later seven more panels with the pains of Mary were added. A Swedish soldier was angry a little later at the images and struck one of the pictures of Mary eight times. He was captured shortly afterwards, taken to Munich and sentenced to death. The sentence was allegedly carried out with three blows of the sword. The picture is said to have bled and it is said that several miracles occurred as a result. This initiated a pilgrimageto the picture. A short time later a wooden chapel was built in place of the damaged panel, which was replaced by a brick building in 1714. In 1737 Count Max Emmanuel von Thurn und Taxis had the chapel raised and expanded. In addition, a new altar was procured into which the damaged image of the Virgin was integrated. The scene of the defacement of the picture is depicted in the ceiling fresco . The pilgrimage to the chapel survived the secularization and continues to this day.
