Alkavare Chapel
The Alkavare Chapel is a small church building in the Sarek National Park in Swedish Lapland . The chapel is located by Lake Álggajávrre on the border with the Padjelanta National Park .
history
In 1672, Same Pagge Andersson discovered silver ore in the area, which was mined in the following decades. As long as the miners were there, the services were held outdoors. After mining stopped in 1702, the priests continued their efforts to evangelize the Sami. A chapel was built for this purpose in 1788. In the middle of the 19th century the settlement was abandoned and the services stopped. In the following years the chapel fell into disrepair until the ruins were restored in 1961.
use
The Alkavare Chapel belongs to the parish of Jokkmokk in the Luleå diocese . The building is used at least once a year for a church service, usually on the third weekend in July. The rest of the time, the building is open to visitors, the door is unlocked.
