History and architecture

The chapel was probably a place of pilgrimage for the veneration of the cross in the early Middle Ages . A cross particle is said to have been here since the time of the Crusaders . The previous building was probably a wooden chapel. There are various attempts to interpret the name, but none of them are certain.

The small plastered hall with sandstone structure and a recently closed choir was built around 1100. During the Thirty Years War the Swedes destroyed the chapel. The square hall was added to the west from 1659 to 1663. At the same time the windows were enlarged and the east window was bricked up. A location at the chapel hermitage was canceled 1,792th The cross vault in the low choir was added later. A flat ceiling was installed in the hall. The sandstone-framed wall niches are partly decorated with shell caps.

Replica of the cross from Limoges with the cross particle
  • The venerated copper cross from about 1200 from Limoges with pit smelting was destroyed during the devastation of the chapel by the Swedes in the Thirty Years War . A new cross was made on the basis of the found middle piece (without cross particles). This was stolen in 1972. A replica is currently on display. Cardinal Degenhardt was able to convey a cross particle from Rome , which was attached to this replica.
  • The iron-studded offering box dates from the first half of the 17th century.
  • The bell was cast by Johann Schweys in 1730.
  • The sandstone stations of the cross were erected in 1876.
