River course
The Kapiskau River has its origin in a nameless lake at an altitude of 194 m . The headwaters are located in the James Bay Lowlands , 35 km southwest of Missisa Lake in the northeast of the Kenora District . It initially flows 40 km in a predominantly north-northeast direction before turning to the south-east for the next 80 km. It flows 5.5 km southwest of Missisa Lake. The Kapiskau River then flows east for about 20 kilometers before turning northeast for the last 200 kilometers. In the lower reaches it takes up the tributaries Atikameg River (right), Beaver River (left) and Otadaonanis River (right). The Kapiskau River finally flows into James Bay at the southern entrance of Akimiski Strait . Further south runs the Albany River , further north the Lawashi River and the Attawapiskat River . The entire course of the Kapiskau River is in the area of the Canadian Shield . Especially in the middle reaches the river shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river bends and oxbow lakes. The catchment area of the Kapiskau River covers approximately 14,000 km².
