River course
The Lawashi River has its origin in a nameless lake at an altitude of 147 m . The headwaters are located in the James Bay Lowlands , 38 km east of the southeast shore of Missisa Lake in the northeast of the Kenora District . It initially flows 60 km in a predominantly easterly direction before turning north-east for the next 100 km. For the last 70 km, the Lawashi River again flows mainly in an easterly direction. About 6.5 km above the mouth, the Lawashi Channel , a southern branch of the Attawapiskat River , meets the Lawashi River from the north. This finally flows into James Bay in the south of Akimiski Street . The Kapiskau River runs further south and the Attawapiskat River further north. The entire course of the Lawashi River is in the area of the Canadian Shield . In the upper reaches, the river shows a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river bends and oxbow lakes. The catchment area of the Lawashi River covers approximately 6300 km².
