The Kapriole is a state-approved private school in Freiburg im Breisgau . It is one of the democratic schools and is a member of the European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC) and the Federal Association of Free Alternative Schools (BFAS).

history

Originating from an initiative by parents and educators, the school was initially approved as a primary school in 1997 under the official name "Free primary school with Montessori education ". In the first year, 15 students of all ages attended the caper. They were accompanied by 3 teachers.

In 1998 the school moved to its current building in Konrad-Guenther-Park in the Waldsee district of Freiburg .

For the 2003/04 school year, the Kapriole was expanded to include secondary and technical secondary schools .

In the 2006/07 school year, the first three students successfully passed their secondary school examination, and a year later two of them passed their secondary school leaving certificate . One student has so far left school without a degree.

Since the 2009/10 school year, the Kapriole has reached its planned final size of 150 students or 15 students per year.

Since the school is housed in barracks that have been intended as a temporary measure for 17 years, a new school building is planned. In a mediation process , a dispute between the school authorities and the workers' welfare (which operates an advice center in one part of the building) as well as residents and nature conservationists was settled. The new building will be built on the layout of the old building so that no more trees have to be felled. Construction work began in early August 2019 with the demolition of the east wing. The cost of the project is estimated at 4.3 million euros. The two-storey new building should be occupied in December 2020.

particularities

Democracy at school

Everyday life at the Kapriole is characterized by far-reaching democratic structures. The weekly school assembly decides on all matters of school life (such as school rules, offers or new hires). Every person present at the meeting - child or adult - has 1 vote.

Self-determined learning

Every student can freely decide at any time what, when, with what and with whom he wants to work. He can choose from a wide range of courses, projects, workshops, etc. Accordingly, he is also free to spend his time doing other things: be it playing, talking, discussing or doing nothing. The school is convinced that learning takes place at all times and is not tied to specific forms of teaching.

Integration / inclusion

For years, children with so-called “ special educational needs” have been taking part in all areas of everyday school life.

No grades

As a rule, there are no school grades at the caper . Instead, the students and parents have regular opportunities for individual discussions with the teachers. In addition, an extensive "annual folder" reports on the previous school year with many pictures and a personal letter from a teacher to the student.

Clarification Committee

In the event of a dispute, the principle of dispute resolution is used. A “clarification committee” at the school, made up of two students and two teachers, decides on sanctions for rule violations. An important principle is that the accused must agree to the sanctions. If no agreement can be reached, the matter can be discussed at the school assembly. Their decision is binding. Teachers can also be reported to the Justice Committee.
