The Kara ( Russian Кара ) is a tributary of the Kara Sea in northern Russia .

The Kara arises at the confluence of the Bolshaya Kara (Большая Кара, 32 km) and Malaja Kara ( Малая Кара , 30 km) at the foot of the Polar Urals . It flows along the western flank of the Urals in a predominantly northerly direction and forms the border between the Komi Republic and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the west and the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in the east. The Kara flows into the Baidarata Bay ( Байдарацкая губа ) in the south of the Kara Sea at Ust-Kara . The Kara has a length of 257 km. It drains an area of ​​13,400 km². The river is ice-free between June and October. The Kara is navigable in the lower reaches.
