Kara Ahmed Pascha (* 15th or 16th century ; † September 29, 1555 in Istanbul ) was an Ottoman statesman and grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire.

Life

Little is known about Ahmed's origins and childhood. He was brought from Albania to Istanbul as part of the boy harvest , where he was educated in the palace school Enderun . After training, he began a career in the palace and was Kapıcıbaşı (head of the gatekeepers), Mir-i alem and Ağa of the Janissaries until he was appointed Beylerbey des Eyâlet Rumelia . In 1522, Ahmed married Fatma Sultan, daughter of Selim I and sister of Sultan Suleyman I.

In the Hungarian campaign of 1543 Kara Ahmed Pascha took the castles of Valpovo and Siklós and conquered Esztergom and Székesfehérvár in the army of the Sultan . He was then appointed commander in chief of the Persian campaign of 1548/49 and the second vizier . When the Sultan planned another campaign in Hungary in 1552, Kara Ahmed Pasha was appointed commander in chief and took the important Timișoara fortress on July 26, 1552 and together with the Beylerbey of Buda , Ali Pascha Hadım , Szolnok . The two military commanders also besieged Eger together , but were unable to take the city despite their numerical superiority.

After Süleyman had his eldest son Mustafa executed in October 1553, unrest broke out among the soldiers. The incumbent Grand Vizier Rustem Pasha was held responsible for the prince's death. The Sultan dismissed Rustem Pasha and appointed Kara Ahmed Pasha as the new Grand Vizier. In 1555 the Grand Vizier undertook campaigns in the Caucasus and conquered numerous castles around Naxçıvan . However, shortly after returning to Istanbul, after a meeting of the divan, he was arrested and beheaded or strangled on the pretext of “corruption” and “incompetence”. It is believed that the deposition and execution went back to an intrigue of Queen Hürrem Sultan, who wanted to see her son-in-law Riistem Pasha as Grand Vizier again. He actually became the successor of Kara Ahmed Pascha.

Kara Ahmed Pascha donated the Kara Ahmed Pascha Mosque in Istanbul.
