The Karabagh ( Azerbaijani Qarabağ atı ) is a Caucasian horse breed that has been used there time and again to refine other horse breeds.
Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .
Exterior
Karabaghi are on average 147-150 cm high, agile, sure-footed, pretty, mostly gold-colored (yellow, brown or rose gold) horses, which were probably a further development of the Turkmen, Persians and Arabs. Its main area of distribution is the southern Caucasus, Georgia , Azerbaijan , Armenia , Nagorno-Karabakh . Probably the Karabaghi in northern Iran are also very similar to the Karabaghi, possibly even a different branch of the same race.
interior
In contrast to the typical escape animal behavior, the Karabagh does not seek his salvation in headless flight, but freezes in danger to a pillar of salt. This behavior can be life-saving in the mountains.
Breeding history
The Karabagh horse breed is a very noble and old Caucasus horse breed and was repeatedly used for crossbreeding with other breeds in the Caucasus and the adjacent areas. Thus, influences of the Karabagh horse can also be found in individual lines in the Kabardiner , Delibos , Don horse or Budjonny breeds , for example . Karabaghi are "burned" in their homeland using the cold-branding process with the foal brandy on the left shoulder and the vintage brandy on the right shoulder.
Due to political differences and armed conflicts, the pure blood karabaghi are no longer available. Today's Karabaghi have a large proportion (mostly 50 percent and more) of thoroughbred Arabs in their records of ancestry.
There is currently no description of the breeding target for the original breeding area; In the Bavarian Special Breeds Association, an attempt was made to draft an own description of the breeding goal. However, this has not been agreed with the original breeding area. Purebred is aimed for. However, since there are only few or no purebred Karabagh horses around the world, thought must be given to how this breed can be continued. This is currently being done in Azerbaijan.
