Lohr Good Friday Procession 2012

The Good Friday procession in Lohr am Main in Lower Franconia is the oldest still cultivated in Germany and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Thirteen life-size figures depicting the Passion of Christ are carried on the morning of Good Friday from the church square in front of St. Michael along a circular path that goes over the Große Kirchgasse, Lohrtorstraße, Seeweg, Fischergasse, Grabenstraße, Anlagenstraße, Alfred- Stumpf-Strasse and the main street runs back to the church square. The procession has been silent since 1960, accompanied only by bangs and the two participating bands.

The Lohr Good Friday procession emerged from what was originally a much larger baroque procession with pictures , which was probably created in the years after the Thirty Years' War . The oldest recorded mention in the church accounts of the parish of St. Michael comes from the year 1656.
