Kari Haakana (born November 8, 1973 in Outokumpu ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player .
Career
Kari Haakana began his career as a hockey player with Lukko Rauma , for which he was active in the SM-liiga in the 1992/93 season . He then played for five years for the Espoo Blues , for which he had already been on the ice in the youth division. From 1998 to 2000, the Finn was under contract for the first time in other European countries when he played for Starbulls Rosenheim in the German Ice Hockey League .
The defender then returned to his Finnish homeland, where he played two seasons for Jokerit Helsinki , with whom he became Finnish champions for the first time in 2002 . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2001 in the eighth round as a total of 248th player by the Edmonton Oilers , for whom he played a total of 13 times in the NHL in the 2002/03 season. After the year in North America, MODO Hockey signed the Finns from the Swedish Elitserien . After only one season this joined his ex-club Espoo Blues , for which he was active in the SM-liiga for the following two seasons. Towards the end of the 2005/06 season, another detour to the DEL to EV Duisburg followed , with which he achieved relegation in the relegation round.
Haakana then stayed abroad and signed a contract in Sweden with first division club Skellefteå AIK , for which he played for two years before going to Finland just before the playoffs of the 2007/08 season, where he was with Kärpät Oulu for the second time in his career became Finnish champion. Following this success, Haakana joined their league rivals Pelicans Lahti . After eight games in the defense of the Swiss first division club Kloten Flyers , he moved towards the end of the 2009/10 season for HC Valpellice in the Italian Serie A1 . In summer 2010 he signed with HDD Olimpija Ljubljana . The Finn ended his career as an active ice hockey player after an injury in late October 2010.
