The Karisimbi is a dormant volcano in the Virunga volcanic chain and the highest point in Rwanda . At 4507 m, the Karisimbi is the highest of the eight peaks in the mountain range that is part of the East African Rift Valley .

The name Karisimbi probably comes from the word isimbi , which means “little white shell” in Kinyarwanda . This is a nod to the white snow cap that sometimes sits on top of the tall volcano.

Between the Karisimbi and Visoke located Karisoke Research Center ( Karisoke Research Center ). Dian Fossey lived there from 1967 until her death in 1985 to observe and research the mountain gorillas , which are only found in this area.
