Karlín (German Karolinenthal ) is a district in the Czech capital Prague , bordered by the Vltava , the district Florenc , the mountain Vítkov and Palmovka . In 1922 the city of Karlín was incorporated into Prague.

history

The construction of the Prague suburb Karolinenthal began in 1817 on the rose garden belonging to the estates of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star . The new settlement was named after Karoline Auguste von Bayern , the fourth wife of Emperor Franz I of Austria.

Karolinenthal was the first planned Prague suburb with a geometric floor plan. Before that there was a nature reserve with orchards and vegetable gardens and the famous summer palace Rosental ( Růžodol ), built by order of the Prague printer Johann Ferdinand von Schönfeld , in which Czech theater was already played in the 18th century. Within the Empire building, which is still partially preserved, the Austrian architect Alois Negrelli (since 1850) Ritter von Moldelbe (1799–1858) built the viaduct (A) of the first Prague railway, the first gas works to provide the entire lighting Prague secured, and several manufactories and factories were built. The first electrically operated tram also ran here.

After the demolition of the Prague city walls , the agricultural land in Karolinenthal, today's Karlín, was one of the cheapest in Prague. As a result, the number of industrial enterprises in the area of the Rohan Island ( Rohanský ostrov ) and that of residential buildings grew very quickly. One of the companies was JU Bencker . Karlín was incorporated into Prague on January 1, 1922. During this time the electrical engineer and industrialist František Křižík (1847–1941) was of great importance u. a. also for Prague-Karolinenthal. He electrified the tram line, which he then sold to the city, and in 1884 he built an electrotechnical factory in Karlin.

One of the most important structures is the Vltava Bridge ( Negrelli Viaduct ) on the Prague – Děčín railway line . Since 1958, this area was an experimental settlement Sídliště Invalidovna , an example of then modern home decor, expanded. This settlement, built on an area of 14 hectares according to a project by Jiří Novotný by Josef Polák and his collective, became important for the urban development of Prague at the end of the 20th century.

In the 1970s, the main traffic was shifted to the Rohan bank ( Rohanské nábřeží ) and the main traffic artery was relieved. Karlín has been connected to the Prague Metro with the Florenc station since 1974 . Since 1990 the metro with the stations Křižíkova and Invalidovna has been leading directly to the center of Karlín. Pedestrian zones were set up above ground. In 1991 Karlín had 14,240 inhabitants. In 2001 Karlín consisted of 500 houses with 12,326 inhabitants.

In 2002 Karlín was badly affected by the Vltava flood. Only after a year did life return to normal.
