The Karl Dedecius Archive (Karl Dedecius Archive of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Polish Archiwum Karla Dedeciusa przy Collegium Polonicum w Słubicach) is a scientific institution belonging to the university library of the European University Viadrina . It is based at the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice , a joint teaching and research facility of the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan .

The archive is named after Karl Dedecius , the founder of the German Poland Institute , one of the most famous translators of Polish and Russian literature into German.

The archive has been headed since 2004 by the historian Błażej Kaźmierczak , who generally deals scientifically with the history of German-Polish relations .

The archive, which was opened in 2001, houses the estate of Karl Dedecius as well as the estate of other personalities, including a. the assets and legacies of Henryk Bereska , Rolf Fieguth and Eugeniusz Wachowiak .

Exhibition about Karl Dedecius' work

The Karl Dedecius Archive was created as part of a project funded by the German Research Society. An important initiator of the project was Klaus-Dieter Lehmann . The archive began its work in 2001 when Karl Dedecius handed over his papers to the European University of Frankfurt (Oder). The official establishment took place on September 17, 2002 in the presence of Karl Dedecius and the then President of the Viadrina Gesine Schwan . The cataloging of Karl Dedecius' legacy was completed in 2004. At the beginning of 2004, the literary translator Henryk Bereska handed over his private archive to the European University Viadrina. Together with his estate from the following year, it was included in the holdings of the Karl Dedecius Archives.

In 2006 the descendants of the pedagogue Erich Dauzenroth, who had died two years earlier, donated his estate to the archive.

Duration

Since it was founded in 2001, the archive has expanded its holdings. It is available to researchers for scientific research. Karl Dedecius' legacy includes not only the translator's private manuscripts and a press archive, but also, above all, correspondence with Polish writers such as B. Tadeusz Różewicz , Czesław Miłosz , Zbigniew Herbert and Wisława Szymborska , as well as with Marion Countess Dönhoff . Erich Dauzenroth's holdings contain the largest German collection of materials on Janusz Korczak . With the Henryk Bereska estate, there are also important materials from another important German translator of Polish literature in the archive's holdings.

The employees of the Karl Dedecius Archive are currently working on the newly acquired papers of Rolf Fieguth and Eugeniusz Wachowiak .

Work of the archive

The Karl Dedecius Archive must be understood as a German-Polish institution. The archival work represents a synthesis of a German and Polish archival school. However, the Karl Dedecius Archive does not see itself as an archival institution alone. It is also active in other (scientific) fields.

The archive is active as a scientific research institution in the field of Polish research on Germany and German research on Poland.

In cooperation with other scientific institutions, it is involved in the publication of two publications. The German-Polish translation yearbook OderÜbersetzen (published by Bożena Chołuj ) is published once a year . In cooperation with the Chair for German Studies at the University of Łódź , the scientific journal is published under the title Rocznik Karla Dedeciusa (Ed. Krzysztof A. Kuczyński ). While the first deals with German-Polish literary translation, the second is the life and work of the archive's namesake, Karl Dedecius .

The archive has also brought several museum exhibitions to life, several of which are permanent exhibitions in the premises of the Collegium Polonicum.

A series of academic events took place under the auspices of the Karl Dedecius Archive or with its assistance. To be mentioned here are, among other things, the multi-day celebrations on the occasion of the 90th birthday of Karl Dedecius.
