Eugeniusz Wachowiak

Eugeniusz Wachowiak (born December 24, 1929 in Leszno , Poland ) is a Polish poet and translator.

Life

After graduating from primary school, he became a post junior worker in Lissa (Leszno) on June 30, 1943 . From 1945 he was a student of the commercial high school and commercial lyceum in Leszno. In 1954 he began studying at the University of Economics in Poznan as a graduate economist. In the same year he published his first poem and in 1958 the first volume of poetry. Since then, seventeen of his volumes have appeared. From 1954 to 1984 he worked in commercial and industrial companies in Leszno, Wschowa and Poznan.

Wachowiak has been translating from the German-speaking area since 1960. In its selection and translation, the first smaller anthology was published in Poland after the Second World War in 1965 . He has translated and edited volumes of poetry by Johannes Bobrowski , Volker Braun , Else Lasker-Schüler , Ernst Meister , Ingeborg Santor and Johannes Poethen . In addition, he was the initiator and co-editor of poetry anthologies and the volume of poems by Erich Arendt . He was the founder of the publishing house of the SPP (Stowarzyszenie Pisarzy Polskich / Association of Polish Writers) in Poznan and the Roman Brandstaetter Fund . With Johannes Poethen he signed the contract for the collaboration between the Stuttgart Writers 'House and the Writers' Association in Poznan in 1991 .

Wachowiak also translated around 800 poems that have appeared in books and magazines in Poland since 1960 (including Paul Celan's death fugue ) and in a Jewish-Polish magazine in Israel. Finally, the prose writers Marianne Bruns , Hanns Cibulka , Franz Fühmann , Rolf Hochhuth , Heinar Kipphardt , Karl May , Armin Müller , Leonie Ossowski , Rolf Schneider , Erwin Strittmatter , Ilse Tielsch , Franz Werfel and Rainer Wochele . He also published letters, essays , memoirs and the like. a. by Ernst Barlach , Johannes R. Becher , Willy Brandt , Karl Dedecius , Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Günter Grass , Reinhard Gröper , S. Kohlhammer, Lew Kopelew , Annemarie Müller-Górzno, Johannes Poethen and Hans Werner Richter .

From 1960 to 1983 he was a member of the ZLP (Związek Literatów Polskich / Polish Writers' Union). From 1981 to 1989 he was connected to unofficial writers and artists circles independent of censorship and official authorities. He has been a freelance worker since 1984. From 1989 he was a member of the newly founded SPP and since 1991 of the PEN CLUB. He had stays in Germany as a guest of INTER NATIONES, the Goethe Institute in Göttingen , the German Poland Institute and the Stuttgart Writer's House , as well as participating in the translation seminar in Buckow near Berlin (Brecht Center) and the university vacation course of the Friedrich- Schiller University in Weimar . He was also a scholarship holder of the Robert Bosch Foundation , the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Hessian State Chancellery .

Wachowiak was also the initiator and supervisor of a poetry competition for the first time in 2002, which the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Gesellschaft in Poland for high school students and students under the motto of a line of his poem Córo Izraela . This competition marked the beginning of an Else Lasker Schüler Forum that took place in both Poland and Israel .

Eugeniusz Wachowiak lived in Leszno until 1961, in Wschowa from 1961 to 1973, then in Poznan.
