Life

Karl-Franz Busch studied from 1946 at the pedagogical faculty of the TH Dresden . In addition to his pedagogical training, he studied civil engineering at the “Municipal Economy” faculty. In 1949 he graduated as a qualified trade teacher (Dipl.-Ing.) For wood and construction.

From 1951 he began working as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Soil and Water Management. In 1954 he wrote his dissertation "The water balance of the soil for plants as a function of the physical soil properties and the level of the groundwater". Busch worked as a senior assistant in the fields of amelioration, wastewater treatment and water supply. In 1957 he completed his habilitation with the subject “Water Supply in City and Agriculture” at the TH Dresden. In the same year he was appointed to the chair for water management and agricultural hydraulic engineering at the TH Dresden as the successor to his teacher, Ferdinand Zunker , and was appointed director of the Institute for Soil and Water Management. From 1961 he took over the management of the chair for urban water management .

He played a key role in founding the Water Management Section in 1968, the structure of which is reflected in the Water Management Department of the TU Dresden and which is still unique at a German university today. Professor Busch headed the section until his retirement in 1982. He supervised 131 dissertations and 36 habilitations.

The Freiberg Bergakademie awarded him the title of honorary doctoral engineer in 1977 because of his services to the rationalization of open pit drainage . He was a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig . In 1983 he received the plaque of honor from the Minister for Higher and Technical Schools of the GDR for "services to university and technical college training" .

Karl-Franz Busch became honorary chairman of the Dresden Groundwater Research Center in 1990 and showed extraordinary commitment to the foundation of the “Scientific School Zunker-Busch-Luckner”, an institution of the Stifterverband for German science .

The Karl-Franz-Busch-Medal is an honor for outstanding achievements in the water industry. It can be awarded annually to students and sponsors of the field of water engineering or specialists in water management, hydrology, hydrobiology, hydrochemistry, hydraulic engineering, waste management or other institutions involved in the hydraulic sciences.
