Köpcke wanted to do a commercial apprenticeship in his hometown Hamburg when he was drafted into the labor service in 1941 . As a radio operator in the Air Force , Köpcke was captured by the French in 1945, from which he was released in 1946.

He then went to Radio Bremen and then in 1949 came to Hamburg as a radio spokesman for the NWDR . His long-standing presence on the screen - he was Tagesschau spokesman from March 2, 1959 to September 10, 1987, chief spokesman since 1964 - and his always correct and serious demeanor earned him the nickname “Mr. Tagesschau ”.

Köpcke was so present among the population that there were spectator protests when he presented the news with a mustache after his summer vacation in 1974 . He used it to cover a scratch he had made while diving.

When the daily topics were introduced in 1978 , in which the speaker took a back seat to the moderator, he protested in the first broadcast by demonstratively rustling paper and clearing his throat .

In German-speaking countries he set standards for the appearance and working methods of news anchors. He died of cancer four years after his retirement at the age of 68, just like his wife, radio colleague Gertie Kelkenberg , whom he married in 1948, shortly before .

His grave is located in Hamburg on the Ohlsdorf cemetery in grid square BK 54 (west of the T-pond ).
