Karl-Heinz Kube grew up in Ruhlsdorf near Teltow with four siblings. At the age of 15 he graduated from school and from then on worked at VEB Industriewerk Ludwigsfelde. He was still employed there when he died. He was bothered by the GDR system and preferred western music and culture. Because of his demeanor, he was threatened with being sent to a youth work center. Together with his friend Detlev S., Kube began to forge escape plans. They rejected their plans to swim through the Teltow Canal, break the border with a stolen car or steal a glider.

On December 16, 1966, Karl-Heinz Kube and Detlev S. drove to Kleinmachnow on a Berlin- type scooter . Covered by darkness, they overcame a wall and cut through wire obstacles with two side cutters that they had carried with them , so that they got into the death strip. There they had a 2 to 2.5 meter high fence in front of them as a final obstacle when they were discovered by a pair of guards and immediately under fire. The fugitives sought cover in a ditch, but this could be seen by another pair of guards. The shots of the second pair of guards hit Karl-Heinz Kube in the head and chest. While Detlev S. was arrested and driven away in a car, the border guards threw the injured man onto the back of a truck.

Two weeks after the incident, the four border guards involved were awarded the medal for exemplary border service or the border troop badge. After reunification, they had to answer in a wall rifle trial before the Potsdam District Court. There they were acquitted of the charge of joint manslaughter because the court could not determine which of the accused was responsible for the fatal shots.
