Karl-Hermann Simon (born September 30, 1930 in Erfurt ; † March 28, 2011 in Eberswalde ) was a German forest scientist and Esperantist .

Live and act

Karl-Hermann Simon was born as the son of Karl Simon from Schkopau / Kreis Merseburg and his wife Erna, geb. von der Burg, born. He has two siblings: Hannelore (1933), Peter (1939). From his marriage to Inge Simon, b. Ehrlich, had four children: Karl-Heinz (1956), Renate (1957), Birgit (1960) and Katrin (1963).

In 1949 he passed the Abitur at the secondary school “Ernst v. Harnack School "to Merseburg as. From 1949 to 1953 he studied at the forest science faculty in Eberswalde of the Humboldt University in Berlin . He completed his forestry studies with a degree in forestry. from. He wrote his diploma thesis on the subject of “Microclimatic studies on the risk of frost in plowed and forest plow stripes” with Göhre. In 1959 he was awarded a doctorate at the Forest Science Faculty in Eberswalde. rer. silv. is doing his doctorate with the topic: "Investigations into artificial soil cover in pine cultures with special consideration of the microclimate".

From 1953 to 1991 he worked at the Institute for Meteorology of the Forest Science Faculty Eberswalde, later in the Department of Forest Ecology / Hydrology at the Institute for Forest Science and the Research Institute for Forestry and Wood Management Eberswalde. Simon began his career as a scientific aspirant, from 1962 he worked as a research assistant and from 1987 as head of the forest hydrology department and deputy head of department.

His research activities initially included forest meteorological and stand climatological aspects, but at the beginning of the 1970s it shifted to the forest hydrological field. While the quantification and balancing of the water balance of forest stands were initially the focus of the work, whereby technological problems of irrigation in forest tree nurseries also played a role, since 1985, in connection with the influence of foreign substances in the forests and forest damage research, there have been increasing problems of quantifying the contamination of foreign substances in forests processed via the wet deposition and the discharge of foreign matter through the seepage water. Under Simon's direction, a large lysimeter system was built in Britz near Eberswalde , the largest in Europe at the time .

In 1978 he joined the Esperanto Association in the Kulturbund of the GDR and in 1981 he founded the Internacia Forstista Rondo Esperantlingua (group of Esperanto-speaking foresters), whose aim is the scientific development of forest terminology in Esperanto. The terminological activity, which was initially limited to German and Esperanto, was expanded to include other languages over time. Simon brought the Lexicon silvestre into being and gathered around him a steadily growing number of language specialists, language enthusiasts and foresters from all over the world. In 1982 he founded the magazine Forstista Informilo, which was published under his editorial staff until 2008. The magazine, which is published to this day, is the communication platform for all employees working on forest terminology.

In 1994 Simon published the first volume of Lexicon silvestre , which was subsequently followed by other volumes. After the reunification of Germany, he initiated the development association Lexicon silvestre eV , which has since been responsible for the preparation and publication of the lexicon of forest terminology "Lexicon silvestre".
