history

The Karl-Marx-Monument at its former location (1990) on the market square, the then Karl-Marx-Platz

The statue was a commissioned work. The occasion for the commission to the sculptor Thieme was the 20th anniversary of the founding of the GDR in 1949. The statue was erected in 1969 on the market square , which was called Marx from 1965 to 1991. During the GDR era, the socialist leadership held rallies on the square. The statue was moved in 1995, dismantled in 2001 for safety reasons due to the damaged base and placed in a depot. A shopping center was built at the previous location.

In 2015, the Left Party in the city council took the initiative to get the memorial from the depot of the Neubrandenburg municipal housing company. She suggested moving him to a new place near the House of Culture and Education . The city council rejected the heatedly discussed application. The suggestion of an SPD city councilor to place Marx at the memorial on the former State Security site and thus to give him a historical context was not taken up.

In March 2018, the city council discussed a proposal from Mayor Silvio Witt (non-party) to display the statue lying on the market square. The sculpture should be placed on a filigree support at a height of 90 centimeters as if it were floating or resting. The city representatives of the left did not want to accept this, they demanded a vertical position. The sculptor Thieme also raised an objection to the horizontal Marx shortly before his death in May 2018. Another proposal was for the courtyard of the Neubrandenburg art collection . It was rejected, as was a location at the regional library or in the cultural park . The city council left the decision on the future location to the city administration in September 2018.

On November 27, 2018, the monument was erected at the Schwanenteich, a small park not far from the Friedrich-Engels-Ring . It was unveiled on November 29, 2018. A couple from Neubrandenburg will contribute 10,000 euros to the costs of the re-installation.

The Karl Marx monument is included in the monument list of the city of Neubrandenburg .
