Life

Gabolshausen , Torweg : Replica of the Gabolshausen wayside shrine created by Karl Albert in 1767 in the Rococo style

Karl Albert was born as the eighth child of a Gaboldshausen farmer. Although he himself recognized his talent for sculpture early on, he lacked an advocate and with this the opportunity to do an apprenticeship in one of the large, well-known workshops. He completed an apprenticeship with the stonemason Peter Polder , but soon created his own wayside shrines .

However, Albert was not allowed to register his own sculpting business as long as he was not married - one of the prerequisites for running such a business at the time. So he remained for most of his life without major commissions - and without recognition as a great sculptor of his time.

After Karl Albert married in 1775, he was finally allowed to open his own sculptor's workshop. But time had worked against him. Albert's work was committed to the Rococo art form, while in many places classicism had already replaced this previous form.

After his wife had already died, Karl Albert also died as a poor widower at the age of 76. He was found frozen to death on a dirt road to Rügheim after a cold winter night - presumably after a stroke.
