Karl Bürger (philologist)

Karl Ernst Bürger (born April 11, 1866 in Seitsch , † September 3, 1936 in Blankenburg (Harz) ) was a German high school teacher and classical philologist who made significant contributions to the critical investigation of ancient Greek and Roman novels.

Life

Bürger was born in the Prussian province of Silesia as the son of inspector Oscar Bürger and was baptized as a Protestant. His mother Maria came from the Willenberg family. From 1878 to 1883 Karl Bürger attended the grammar school in Glogau . At the age of 17 he went to the University of Berlin , where he studied Classical Philology and Ancient History from 1883 to 1887. His teachers included Ernst Maass , Hermann Diels , Elimar Klebs , Hans Droysen and Ulrich Köhler . After successful graduation to the Dr. phil. in 1887 on the subject of De Lucio Patrensi sive de ratione inter Asinum qf Lucianeum Apuleique Metamorphoses intercedente he worked in Berlin as a high school teacher until 1892. He then became the private tutor of Friedrich Wilhelm von Prussia, the youngest son of Albert von Prussia in Braunschweig . In the spring of 1896 he took a teaching position at the grammar school in Blankenburg (Harz) , where he worked until 1927 with the title of professor. In 1927 he retired and died in 1936 after a stroke.
