Karl Christian Kehrer
Karl Christian Kehrer (born August 1, 1755 in Dillenburg , † April 7, 1833 in Ballenstedt ) was a German portrait , landscape and history painter .
Life
Karl Christian Kehrer received his first lessons from Anton Wilhelm Tischbein in Hanau , where he stayed for four years. In 1777 he went to Erbach im Odenwald , worked as a portrait painter, and also worked in various areas on the Rhine. After a stopover in Hanover in 1782, he went to the court of the Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg in Ballenstedt . There he was allowed to attend the Academy of Arts in Dresden from 1785 , where he stayed until October 1787, after which he went to Leipzig. In 1788 he returned to Ballenstedt.
The training he received during the two years in Dresden was crucial for his further career and contributed significantly to his artistic reputation . His skills as a painter finally brought Kehrer to Berlin in 1790, where he stayed until 1792. In 1793 he was accepted into the Prussian Academy of Arts as a member of the "Section for the Fine Arts" . From 1815 he was also a member of the "Electoral Hessian Drawing Academy" in Hanau, the origin of today's State Drawing Academy in Hanau .
In addition to portraits, Karl Christian Kehrer's work includes landscapes and genre pieces . In 1819, two small pictures attracted particular attention: a young artist in an old German costume in front of the Madonna he had painted, and the genius of the visual artist in conflict with the Accise and customs servants in front of a city gate. The picture is exhibited today in the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie in Dessau . Kehrer also painted after works of poetry, for example in 1826 “Des Künstler Erdenwallen” in three pictures after Goethe . Hunting pieces, representations from contemporary history and the Thirty Years' War are also known.
His younger brother was the Erbach court painter and archivist Christian Kehrer .
