Karl Fürstenhofer

Karl Fürstenhofer (born December 25, 1899 in Neudörfl , † July 3, 1965 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician.

Life

Karl Fürstenhofer was a trained car mechanic. He became involved early on in the social democratic party and was a member of the workers' battalions that fought off Hungarian military units in Burgenland in 1920 that wanted to prevent the German-speaking areas of western Hungary from joining Austria. Later he was a member of the Republican Protection Association . After the socialist party was banned by the authoritarian corporate state in 1934, Fürstenhofer was active with the Revolutionary Socialists , where he worked illegally. He was arrested in 1935 but had to be released in 1936 for lack of evidence.

After the Second World War he was involved in building up the party organization in the Vienna district of Favoriten . He was a member of the Vienna state parliament and municipal council from 1946 to 1964. Fürstenhofer became known to other circles through his commitment to allotment gardening. For many years he was President of the Central Association of Allotment Gardeners, Settlers and Small Animal Breeders in Austria and Vice President of the Green International .

Karl Fürstenhofer was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery . After his death, the residential complex Theodor-Sickel-Straße 12 of the non-profit housing and settlement cooperative Volksbau (1966–1968) was named Karl-Fürstenhofer-Hof . The Karl Fürstenhofer allotment garden association is located at Neilreichgasse 110 . In 1989, Fürstenhoferstrasse in Vienna-Favoriten was named after him.
