Karl Friedrich Ludwig Schäffer (also Carl , Schaeffer ; born September 12, 1746 in Oppeln , † April 6, 1817 in Breslau ) was a German lawyer and musician .

Life

Schäffer, son of the Oberkonistorial- und Oberamtsregierungsekretär Martin Schäffer, was a public pianist at the age of twelve . Nevertheless, he mainly devoted himself to studying law , while also studying music theory . First he went to the University of Halle in 1768 and to the University of Leipzig in 1770 . In Leipzig he met Christoph Martin Wieland , Leopold Friedrich Günther von Goeckingk and Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim , among others , and devoted himself more to his artistic streak. He conducted concerts for lovers and performed as a pianist himself.

After graduating, Schäffer embarked on a career as a lawyer. He was initially an auscultator in Frankfurt on the Oder . There, too, he quickly established concerts for lovers. He then became an auscultator in Wroclaw, then worked there at the Accise and Customs Court in Wroclaw. There followed a time as a lawyer in the government of the Principality of Anhalt-Koethen-Pless . In 1789 he became a judicial commissioner , and in 1797 a public notary in the Upper Silesian department with the title of judicial commissioner. Despite a heavy workload and increasing physical suffering, he remained true to his commitment to music until the end of his life. He established house concerts and often appeared in public on the piano or violin .

Works

Between 1790 and 1800 Schäffer composed six large piano concertos with orchestra, as well as a large number of three-part serenades , arias , songs and dances . His most famous works include two operas, namely Malmir and Gertraud and Der Orkan . Malmir und Gertraud , for example, was performed in the court theater of Pless in 1798 and 1800 . In 1810 he composed the piece Fantasie for orchestra and two choirs. Like the operas, his Requiem also met with audiences' approval.
