Karl Johann Georg (also Carl Georg ; born April 25, 1855 ; † April 22, 1904 in Hanover ) was a German publisher , bibliographer , non-fiction author and editor.

Life

Karl Johann Georg was born under the Kingdom of Hanover in 1855. In the former royal seat of Hanover, he joined the bookstore Fr. Cruse's Buchhandlung und Antiquariat, owner Gustav Othmer , as a bookstore assistant in 1879 at the age of about 24, which at Grosse Aegidienstraße 4 developed into the leading school bookstore in Hanover.

In 1877 Karl Georg published the title Die Reiseliteratur Deutschlands from the years 1871 to April 30, 1877 and the most important publications from earlier times under the author's name “Carl Georg” . Including plans and travel maps ... which was published in the Hinrichs'sche Buchhandlung previously founded by Johann Conrad Hinrichs in Leipzig .

When the owner Gustav Othmer died on January 4, 1881 at the age of only 47 years and left his wife Johanne Sophie Dorothea Othmer in addition to his two underage children, the widow granted the previous bookstore assistant Karl Johann Georg power of attorney in the spring of the same year while she went on business even in the hope of a cheap resale.

After Johanne Othmer sold her business to both her authorized signatory Karl Georg and the pastor's son Friedrich August Leopold Ost as co-owner in 1885 , the residential and commercial building remained in the property of the Othmer family until 1917. The address book, city and business manual of the royal residence city of Hanover and the city of Linden from 1885 now recorded the “Fr. Cruse's Buchhandlung & Antiquariat, owner Ost und Georg ”in the“ Große Aegidienstr. 4. "

From 1889 to 1912, Georg and Ost jointly published the keyword catalog. From 1892 on, the address book was only registered by Karl Georg as the owner of "Fr. Cruse's Buchhandlung & Antiquariat".

For Karl Georg, who until recently described himself as a bibliographer and publisher's bookseller, the keyword catalog ... more and more became the center of his life, so that in 1898 he sold his bookstore to Alfred Troschütz from Riesa and only devoted himself to catalog work. But he died early, three days before his 49th birthday, in Hanover.
