Johann Conrad Hinrichs (born October 30, 1763 in Harburg near Hamburg , † September 22, 1813 in Leipzig ) was a German bookseller and publisher .

Life

In 1796 Hinrichs became a partner in a bookstore founded on August 1st, 1791 by August Leberecht Reinicke in Leipzig . From 1801 he ran the bookstore alone. The basis of his own publications was a catalog of all new publications that has been published every six months since 1798. This catalog was more complete and appeared faster than comparable works, which is why it soon reached a print run of 5,000 pieces. Soon thereafter, various works of travel literature as well as publications on law, political science and history followed.

Hinrichs died on September 22nd, 1813. His grave is in the old Johannisfriedhof in Leipzig. After his death, his business was run by his widow Christiane Wilhelmine Hinrichs, a sister of Reinicke, initially alone and from 1816 together with her nephew Christian Friedrich Adolf Rost. He became a partner on August 1, 1819, the business was henceforth called JC Hinrichs'sche Buchhandlung and existed - now specialized in works on theology and oriental studies - until the 20th century.

In 1926, a street in the Leipzig district of Neuschönefeld was named after him in honor of Johann Conrad Hinrichs .

The archive of the JC Hinrichs publishing house in Leipzig was largely burned in the bombing raid on Leipzig in early December 1943. Remaining remnants of around seven linear meters have been in the Saxon State Archives - Leipzig State Archives since 2010 and are there as 22208 JC Hinrichs Verlag , Leipzig usable. Most of these are correspondence with important scientists from the fields of Egyptology , Oriental Studies and Theology.
