Karl Gottlieb Reinhard Oehler (* 1797 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1874 there ) was the owner of the tar paint works Oehler in Offenbach am Main . He was also a chemist, professor, philologist and Cantonal School Councilor ( Aarau ).

Karl Gottlieb Reinhard Oehler comes from a family of craftsmen who have lived in Bingenheim in Hesse for several generations . Oehler, who was naturalized in Aarau in 1826 through his marriage to Elise Hunziker, bought Ernst Sell's (1808–1854) tar paint factory in Offenbach am Main, founded in 1842, in 1850.

His first marriage to the daughter of the founder and head of the Aarau Cantonal School Elise Hunziker (* 1802 in Aarau , † 1827 there) had two children and established the Aarau part of the family. A grandson from this line was Alfred Oehler.

From his second marriage to the civil servant daughter Louise Jaeger (* 1814 in Aarau, † 1901 in Frankfurt am Main) have nine children, including Karl (1836–1909) and Eduard Oehler (1837–1909), who later took over the management of the tar paint works in Offenbach took over. Eduard is buried in the old cemetery in Offenbach . This family grave has been preserved.

  1. Note: There are no references to a chemistry degree from Oehler in the specialist chemical literature. In addition, Sell (1808–1854) and Oehler (1797–1874) do not fit in with a common training period in terms of age. There is also a publication from 1843 AW Hofmann, Chemical investigation of organic bases in coal tar oil , in which the name Sell - but not Oehler - is mentioned.
