life and work

Karl Hanns Taeger: Winter Landscape

Taeger came from an old Saxon hunter and forester family. After attending the Dresden Kreuzschule, he began his training at the Dresden Art Academy in 1873 with the history painter Julius Hübner , and then studied for a year in Munich with the animal painter Heinrich von Zügel . During this time he discovered the Tyrolean Alps, it was the model for numerous studies and pictures.

Returning from Munich he worked as a recognized landscape painter and until 1905 as a teacher of landscape painting at the Dresden Art Academy. Numerous study trips encouraged him to do oil paintings, watercolors and charcoal drawings, which were widely recognized.

The focus of his artistic work was pictures of nature from the Dresdner Heide , hunting motifs, pictures from the Zillertal and Lusatia , where his eldest brother Arthur was head forester. Local history documents, such as B. a picture of the forest inn of the Langebrücker Hofewiese belonged to his work. For the ticket hall of the train station in Liegnitz (today Legnica in south-west Poland) he created three large oil paintings: Part from the Giant Mountains and views from Liegnitz. All three pictures are lost today.

From 1894 until his death in 1937 he worked in his own studio in Langebrück near Dresden.

Taeger painted in oil, charcoal and watercolors. For the latter, he used the technique of gouache painting. His pictures bear the character of German impressionism and live primarily from the light and shadow effect.

Most of his pictures are in private ownership, some in a collection in Langebrück and in the Dresden City Museum. But they were also traded in auction houses. In the collection of the Museum Foundation Post and Telecommunication there are three pictures of the same format in a cycle: country mail carriers in sunshine , country mail carriers in thunderstorms and country mail carriers in winter .

Appreciations

In 1993 a street was named after him in a new development in the Heidehof district.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the painter's death, the municipality of Langebrück organized a public exhibition in April 1997 together with the Saxon Heritage Protection Association . Another followed in April 2011. More than 50 pictures were shown in the Langebrücker Bürgerhaus.
