Karl Hans Simmrock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Hans Simmrock (* 29. April 1930 in Darmstadt , † 2. May 2017 ) was a German Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering of the Technical University of Dortmund .

Life

Karl Hans Simmrock was born as the son of Karl and Erna Maria (née Greunig) Simmrock. After graduating from high school, he studied chemistry at what is now the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he became a member of the Corps Franconia Darmstadt in 1951 and graduated in 1958 with a degree in chemistry . In the following year he received his doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. Nat.).

Karl Hans Simmrock also worked as a chemist in the Chemische Werken Hüls AG in Marl in the northern Ruhr area. He then received a professorship at the University of Dortmund in the field of technical chemistry, within the framework of which he worked from 1968 to 1995 on his areas of work in statistics and mathematical modeling of chemical processes, chemical process development, electrochemical processes with ion exchange membranes and cooperating expert systems researched and taught on process synthesis. During his teaching activities, he headed the Institute for Chemical Engineering and also held the Chair of Technical Chemistry (process science). The Faculty of Biological and Chemical Engineering at the University of Dortmund includes him in the list of emeriti.

In the course of his research in these areas, he applied for three patents, which were accepted by the European Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), respectively. These are chemical-technical processes, such as the process for separating diacetyl-containing mixtures of methyl ethyl ketone , ethyl acetate , ethanol , water and optionally toluene and n-hexane (1990), the Method for processing chlorinated hydrocarbon residues (1980) and the Process of producing olefin oxide (1978).

From 1994 to 2011 he was managing director of the Process Design Center GmbH. The PDC continues the development of PROSYN ® by making use of new technologies and equipment.

Scientific work

Since his dissertation, he has focused on the digitized treatment of chemical process development. This led from the optimizing test planning based on statistical methods to the mathematical modeling of individual technological process steps to a general concept for chemical process development (artificial intelligence), which was ultimately also used in industry as an optimizing expert system PROSYN ® . The experimental area of his work mainly included the subject of electrochemistry using coated ion exchange membranes in sodium sulfate, chloralkali and water electrolysis as well as in organic electrochemistry. Numerous other experimental work largely served as a contribution to maintaining the experimental standard at a chair for technical chemistry in the field of process engineering.
