Karl "Kaaleerannguaq" Apollo Klemens Otto Heilmann (born August 14, 1914 in Nuuk ; † 1998 ) was a Greenlandic catechist , local politician , judge , musician and genealogist .

Life

Karl Heilmann was born in Nuuk in 1914 as the son of carpenter asser Peter Johannes Heilmann (1876–?) And his wife Magdalena Amalia Henriette Egede (1881–?). Through his mother he was a nephew of the regional councilor Abel Egede (1880-1945) and thus a cousin of the regional councilor and businessman Peter Egede (1908-1996).

He was appointed catechist in Maniitsoq in 1936 . After two years he moved to Kangaamiut , where he stayed until 1945. He then became a catechist again in Maniitsoq. Two years later he left Maniitsoq again and was a catechist in Paamiut from 1947 to 1950 . From 1950 to 1996 he was a third catechist in Maniitsoq, before retiring at the age of 82 after 60 years of work.

On March 3, 1937, Karl Heilmann founded the sports club Kâgssagssuk Maniitsoq . From 1951 to 1959 he was a member of the council of the newly founded municipality of Maniitsoq , temporarily as chairman and thus de facto as mayor. From 1958 to 1974 he was a district judge in Maniitsoq. In addition, he worked as an organist , hymn poet and conductor of the choral society in Maniitsoq. In 1969 he was commissioned to build a museum, which opened in 1974 as the Maniitsoq Museum . In 1987 he published the genealogical book Kalaallit kinguaariit on the families of Greenland. Apparently he did not finish a second book during his lifetime.

On March 3, 1994, he was made an honorary citizen of Maniitsoq. On June 21, 1996 he received the Greenland Culture Prize . Karl Heilmann died in 1998 at the age of almost 84.
