Karl Heinz Birkner

Karl Heinz Birkner (born October 3, 1919 , † October 13, 1995 ) was a Leipzig illustrator and book designer.

Life

1935 to 1942 apprenticeship and work as a rotogravure retoucher in the Brandstetter graphic company, 1943 to 1950 studies at the Academy for Graphics and Book Art (now the University of Graphics and Book Art) and master school for the graphic trade in Leipzig, 1950 to 1952 illustrator at the Leipziger Volkszeitung , 1953 until 1995 freelance book illustrator and book designer. He illustrated a. a. the centenary calendar and peasant rules , detective novels like Betatom and science fiction like Earth without Night .

Birkner Prize

The Birkner Foundation emerged from the estate of the artist who died in 1995. The primary purpose of the foundation is to promote culture and art. The Birkner Prize is awarded annually for outstanding achievements to students at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art , preferably in the fields of illustration and book design.

The winners since 1997 include a. Christoph Ruckhäberle and Franziska Junge .
