August Wilhelm Karl Hillmer (born August 15, 1869 in Suderburg ; † August 19, 1944 ) was a German teacher (director of studies) and for many years head of the Suderburg meadow construction school .

Life

Hillmer was born as the son of the provincial meadow builder Heinrich Christoph Wilhelm Hillmer in Suderburg, district Oldendorf I. After attending primary school in Suderburg and graduating from secondary school in Uelzen, he studied in the preparatory institute and the seminar in Wunstorf. He then worked for 5 years as a teacher in Husum in the Nienburg district and temporarily as a high school teacher in Gronau (Hannover). Before taking the secondary school teacher examination, he studied five semesters at the universities of Berlin, Halle and Leipzig. After working at the Wiesenbauschule Suderburg for two winters , he was appointed director of this school on October 1, 1898, which he then headed until 1935.

Under his leadership, the institution, which was later named a State Engineering Academy and in 1971 a University of Applied Sciences , experienced a significant upgrade. In 1898 the first school building was put into operation. A considerably larger school building was inaugurated as early as 1906. In the same year Hillmer managed to get the school to take the cultural building technician and meadow building master exam. In 1930 it was recognized as a higher technical school .

Hillmer reports in his memoirs that his very long term of office helped him well in efforts to upgrade the institution. So he got stuck several times with his various concerns with the responsible ministries. Then he simply waited for the retiring officer to retire and then called on his successor again.

Karl Hillmer was married to Margarete Ella Luise Döhrmann (1878–1964) from Böddenstedt since September 29, 1903 .

Honors

  • After him the Karl-Hillmer-Str. named in Suderburg.
  • The alumni and funding organization Karl Hillmer Society bears his name.
